Focusing properties of a permanent magnet plasma lens

Abstract: We describe some experimental investigations of the focusing properties of an electrostatic plasma lens based on the use of permanent magnets instead of conventional current-driven coils. These investigations were performed at the IP NASU (Kiev) and at the LBNL (Berkeley) using moderate energy, high current, broad, heavy ion beams. Computer simulation of physical processes involved for typical experimental conditions was also carried out.
