Focal liver lesions: sinusoidal phase of CEUS

Abstract: Ultrasound examination is the first imaging modality for hepatic study in neoplastic and chronic liver diseases. Focal liver lesions frequently cause diagnostic problems in terms of characterization, especially when small and hypoechoic to the rest of the parenchyma. Contrast--enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) has shown its value in the characterization of focal liver lesions. This study assessed the value of the sinusoidal phase of CEUS with a second-generation contrast agent in the characterization of focal li… Show more

“…Of particular interest, though, is the fact that Sonazoid-enhanced US can show liver parenchymal images in the postvascular phase because Sonazoid microbubbles are phagocytosed by hepatic Kupffer cells, similar to Levovist, but which is not possible with SonoVue and Definity [11, 12, 19]. Previous reports have described that Levovist-enhanced US can detect liver tumors with a sensitivity of 87–91% [21,22,23]. However, Levovist-enhanced US has the limitation that the liver parenchymal image is obtained by only one scan.…”

“…D'Onofrio et al [188] reported that SonoVue-enhanced US detected hepatic malignancy as defects in the sinusoidal phase, with a sensitivity of 85%, specificity of 88%, positive predictive value of 92%, and negative predictive value of 77%. In our study, Sonazoid-enhanced harmonic US detected hepatic malignancy with a sensitivity of 95% (208/219), specificity of 93.3% (28/30), positive predictive value of 99% (208/210), and negative predictive value of 97.4% (38/39).…”

“…Various gases or shells have been studied for their use as sonographic contrast agents [8][9][10][11] , and contrast-enhanced harmonic US using various media has been possible [6,[12][13][14] . Sonazoid has been licensed from January 2007 exclusively in Japan.…”
