Flying couplers above spinning resonators generate irreversible refraction

Abstract: Creating optical components that allow light to propagate in only one direction-that is, that allow non-reciprocal propagation or 'isolation' of light-is important for a range of applications. Non-reciprocal propagation of sound can be achieved simply by using mechanical components that spin. Spinning also affects de Broglie waves , so a similar idea could be applied in optics. However, the extreme rotation rates that would be required, owing to light travelling much faster than sound, lead to unwanted wobblin… Show more

“…Concerning a possible experimental implementation of nonreciprocal UP, it is worth noting that UPB for non-spinning devices has already been demonstrated experimentally in two recent works [36,37]. A number of experiments (including the very recent work [54]) have shown non-reciprocal quantum effects in spinning devices. So the main experimental task for achieving non-reciprocal UPB in a spinning device would be to combine experimental setups of, e.g., Refs.…”

“…The Q factor is about 2.25 × 10 5 , corresponding to a linewidth of 0.86GHz. This large mode splitting will lead to applications in optical isolation, if the critical coupling is achieved, and optical circulation by a Mach–Zehnder interferometer configuration …”

“…Novel non-reciprocal structure designs, like isolators and circulators, have been proposed recently due to their important roles in photonic and microwave circuits [50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57]. After the experimental demonstration of the Yjunction structure, we are in position to integrate different PTIs into another practical structure, namely a 4-port circulator.…”
