Fly Ash Penetration through Electrostatic Precipitator and Flue Gas Condenser in a 6 MW Biomass Fired Boiler

Abstract: The effects of an electrostatic precipitator and a flue gas condenser on size resolved fly ash particle concentration and composition were studied in a 6 MW biomass combustion unit, fired with moist forest residue. The boiler was of moving grate type. The fly ash particles were sampled upstream and downstream of the electrostatic precipitator and flue gas condenser, respectively. Fine particle number size distributions were measured using an electric mobility spectrometer (SMPS) and coarse particle number size… Show more

“…Metal-rich particles will occur mostly in the submicron regime of bimodal distributions. 15,[33][34][35][36][37] The mechanisms leading to a bimodal distribution are well described. 19,38 The coarse mode consists mainly of entrained inorganic material, whereas the fine (submicron) mode forms by volatilization followed by chemical recombination and condensation.…”

“…Zn evaporation within the cupola has been experimentally established, 25,28 but few data concerning emission size distribution and size-dependent metal emissions are available. 26 -28 However, other stationary sources of high temperature aerosol such as municipal waste incineration plants, 16,17,29,30 pulp and paper boilers, 31 biomass combustion, 18,32,33 and primarily coal combustion sources 15,34 -36 have been well characterized using the principles, methods, and instruments of aerosol science.…”
