Flux Growth and Crystal Structure Refinement of Calcite Type Borate GaBO3

Abstract: A single crystal of gallium borate, GaBO3, 4 × 4 × 0.2 mm 3 in size has been grown by spontaneous crystallization with a molten flux based on a Bi2O3-3B2O3 solvent. From single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement, GaBO3 was found to crystallize in the trigonal calcite type, space group R-3c, with cell dimensions a = 4.56590(10) and c = 14.1764(4) Å, Z = 6. Layers of distorted [GaO6] octahedra are interleaved by layers of triangular planar [BO3] unites. The transmission spectrum on a single crystal indicated … Show more

“…Currently, there are more than ten already known structural types of oxyborates: warwickites, ludwigites, kotoites, huntites, calcite, pyroborates, etc. . Oxyborates’ main feature is a presence of low‐dimensional elements: stairs, zigzag walls, tapes, etc.…”

“…In this method, the reactant materials are completely dissolved in molten salt to obtain a uniform liquid, and a single crystal with large size can then be obtained by limiting the number of nuclei formed during cooling. Up to now, many mixed-metal oxides, sulfides, and complex intermetallics have been successfully obtained using this method [10][11][12][13]. We think the Na 2 O-B 2 O 3 system can be used as a good flux for the low melting point (700~900 • C) and powerful dissolving capacity for many oxides, including refractory rare-earth oxides.…”

“…AlBO 3 requires hydrothermal high-pressure synthesis techniques [73] since it does not lie on the convex hull, but once synthesized, remains stable. In addition, single crystals of InBO 3 , ScBO 3 , and GaBO 3 have been grown via molten flux at ambient pressures with the GaBO 3 crystals measuring 4 × 4 × 0.2 mm 3 [73,74]. Despite this easy synthesis, to our knowledge no one has attempted to dope these materials or research them for power electronic applications.…”
