Flux and particle life-time measurements in field-reversed configurations

Abstract: Flux and particle life-times of field-reversed configurations (FRC) have been measured in the TRX-1 field-reversed theta pinch. These measurements have been correlated with detailed numerical transport calculations based on classical and lower-hybrid-drift (LHD) resistivity. The data appear to imply spatially uniform resistivity profiles with a magnitude somewhat lower than that given by the wave energy bound of LHD fluctuations. Using a programmed formation technique it has been possible to form FRCs with lar… Show more

“…However, there is a concern that impurities in the plasma will degrade performance during the FRC equilibrium phase. Plasma impurities are a common occurrence in FRC plasmas 8 and sometimes require extensive mitigation. 9 For this work, we focused our efforts on quantifying the radiative loss from a high-density FRC and not on impurity mitigation.…”

“…Although the triggering system is capable of firing the guns independently, all guns were triggered simultaneously for this study. Both MSX and FRCHX use "programmed" formation 41,42 to force reconnection to occur at externally applied magnetic cusps. This promotes symmetry and prevents tearing instabilities for more reproducible and well-formed FRCs.…”
