Fluorophosphate Glasses with High Terbium Content for Magneto-optical Applications

Abstract: Fluorophosphate glasses are investigated following the composition law (1 − x)(70NaPO 3 − 30BaF 2 ) − xTbF 3 with x = 35, 40, 45, and 50 mol %. Bubble-free vitreous rods of 5 cm length and 4 mm in diameter are obtained without crystallization from 35 to 50 mol % of TbF 3 by using the conventional melt-quenching process. The maximum content of Tb 3+ ions successfully dissolved in these glasses corresponds to an ionic density of 8.88 × 10 21 ions cm −3 , which is the highest value ever reported in a fluorophosph… Show more

“…In particular, for the NIR region (at 1550 nm), MO materials are good options for applications in telecommunication systems. Among all the paramagnetic ions, Tb 3+ is one of the most attractive 1 , 13 , 18 . It has the electronic configuration 4f 8 → 4f 7 5d 8,9 , providing good paramagnetic behavior and among the highest magnetic moments (μ eff = 9.5–9.72) and susceptibilities (J = 6, g = 1.46) of all the rare earth ions 1 .…”

“…In the present work, glass of the composition 35NaPO 3 − 15BaF 2 −50TbF 3 (mol %) reported in anterior work is used as a starting material due to its large solubility of RE. 33 The glass samples will be co-doped with three lanthanide trivalent ions, Pr, Dy, and Ho, by substituting for Tb concentrations from 0 to 100 at. % (i.e., Tb-free).…”
