Fluoro- and Chromogenic Chemodosimeters for Heavy Metal Ion Detection in Solution and Biospecimens

Abstract: and developed the calixarenes anchored chromogenic and fluorogenic molecules to detect specific cations, anions, and neutral molecules. In 2007, he moved to Department of Chemistry at Korea University in Seoul as a professor. His current research is in four major fields: calixarenes, chemosensors, DDS, and MRI contrasting agent. To date his research records 250 scientific publications and 30 domestic and international patents.

“…But upon the addition of Cu 2 þ to RBPH in the pH range 1-6 the solution turns pink and becomes highly fluorescent due to the transformation of spiro closed form to open form [21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. The above transformation was achieved by coordination of Cu 2 þ to the 'O' atom of the carbonyl group and 'N' atom of the imido goup of phenyl hydrazide moiety of the probe leads to the formation of the complex and subsequent hydrolysis of this complex leads to the formation of delocalized xanthene conformation of the rhodamine moiety [21,22] (Fig.…”

“…Xanthene derivatives possess very attractive spectroscopic properties such as large molar extinction coefficient, high fluorescence quantum yield, and visible light excitation as well as long wavelength emission [21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. These derivatives are colorless and non fluorescent, in spiro ring closed form whereas ring-opened forms are colored and have strong fluorescence emissions.…”

“…[4][5][6]. Owing to the vulnerability of Pb 2+ at low concentrations, occupational and environmental exposures remain a serious problem [7][8][9]. Due to public health campaigns, a decline in its commercial usage has resulted, and hence lead poisoning has become rare.…”

“…[5][6][7][8] So far, there have been some successful achievements in the development of fluorescent chemosensors for detecting Hg 2+ . [9][10][11][12][13][14] However, these chemosensors were used in the homogeneous phase, which is not suitable for the separation, removal and enrichment of target species, or in rapid screening applications.…”
