Spectacular advances in superconductors have taken place in the past two years. The upper temperature for superconductivity has risen from 23 K to 122 K, and there is reason to believe that the ascent is still ongoing. The materials causing this excitement are oxides. Those oxides that superconduct at the highest temperatures contain copper-oxygen sheets; however, other elements such as bismuth and thallium play a key role in this new class of superconductors. These superconductors are attracting attention because of the possibility of a wide range of applications and because the science is fascinating. A material that passes an electrical current with virtually no loss is more remarkable when this occurs at 120 K instead of 20 K.

NMR signals of ~gF have been measured in the polycrystalline inorganic conductor Ag2F and in the polycrystalline insulators AgF, YOF, EuOF, YF3, CuF2, BaF 2 and KF to compare them to the signals found in the so-called ~~l-2-3-type~~ compounds with claimed formulas RBa2Cu3OT.xF ~ (R=Y and Eu). No evidence for a Knight-shifted, built-in fluorine-signal was found in the 1-2-3-type superconductors, whereas Ag2F shows a clearly downfield shifted ~gF peak with reference to AgF.

The effects of fluorine on superconducting properties and microstructures of top-seeded melt grown YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ bulks have been investigated through BaF 2 additions (up to 1 wt% BaF 2 ). DTA measurements show that the decomposition temperature is lowered when the content of BaF 2 is increased (1003 • C for the sample doped with 1 wt% BaF 2 ). The microstructures of the doped samples are similar to those observed in fluorine-free samples. In particular, a negligible effect is observed on the size of the Y211 particles. In the same way, the superconducting properties do not change with the additions of BaF 2 . DTA measurements of heavily doped compositions (up to 10 wt% BaF 2 ) show that the decomposition temperature is lowered down to 969 • C for an addition of 5 wt% BaF 2 . This makes BaF 2 additions promising to replace silver additions in welding processes.
