Fluorination as Effective Method for Tuning the Electromagnetic Response of Graphene

Abstract: Fluorinated graphene (FG) has been obtained by a fluorination of thermally exfoliated graphite fluoride C 2 F layers using a gaseous mixture of BrF 3 and Br 2 at room temperature. Comparative study of electromagnetic (EM) response of thin FG films after recovering their conductivity via different methods is presented in microwave (GHz) and terahertz (THz) frequency ranges. We discovered that fluorination can be used as promising tool for producing tunable EM interference (EMI) shielding materials, combining r… Show more

“…a highly stable graphene nanosheet in which a certain amount of C atoms is covalently bonded to F atoms, [20] is one of the most studied chemically functionalized derivatives of Gr. Fluorination signicantly tailors the electronic and optical properties of Gr towards either a high-quality insulator [21] with a wide bandgap of up to 3 eV [19] or semi-metal with AC conductivity at 600 GHz up to 90 × 10 3 S•m −1 [22]. The later can change by several orders of magnitude with fluorine content [23].…”

“…The productive discussions during the meeting (which has been held on 19–24 March 2017) were provided by perfect organization and nice natural environment, including ski slopes, at Krasnaya Polyana resort (Sochi, Russia). The contributions (in total an amount of 30) of this Special Issue are covering research work related to production, characterization and application of the nanocarbon materials which include diamonds, carbon nanotubes, graphene other types of nanocarbon materials, and their composites . Traditionally for the NPO Workshop series there is also some portion of reports devoted to non‐carbon materials demonstrating properties and phenomena analogous to those observed for nanocarbons.…”
