Fluoride penetration from three orthodontic adhesives: an experimental study

Abstract: ObjectiveTo examine the prophylactic potential of 3 orthodontic bonding adhesives: Fuji Ortho SC, Illuminate, and Resilience.MethodsThirty-six Wistar Wag rats were randomly divided into 4 groups consisting of 9 rats each. One of the groups received no treatment and was used as a control. In the other groups, individual bands coated with one of the 3 adhesives were cemented to the lower incisors. Enamel samples were obtained after 6 and 12 weeks and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy in combination wit… Show more

“…It was found that the application of fluoride around the orthodontic brackets had shown a positive effect in preventing of enamel demineralization when compared with composite which agreed with Wagner and Szepictowska (2013) 35 , Alexander and Ripa (2000) 14 , Khan and Antony (2013) 33 . While disagreeing with Corry et al (2000) 15 which may be due the sample size and the pH cycling period.…”

“…In this study a scanning with the electron microscope for teeth was performed in order for better detection of demineralization which was done also by Chatzistavrou et al (2010) 24 , Wagner and Szepietowska (2013) 35 as the scanning by electron microscope had the ability to examine the enamel surface efficiently.…”

“…Fixed orthodontic appliances increase the incidence of white spot lesions (WSLs) on the facial surface of teeth because the appliances provide spaces for plaque retention. 1 , 2 , 3 After the removal of the orthodontic brackets or bands, the WSLs can be arrested because of changes in the oral environment. In some cases, however, the WSLs still remain as whitish opacities, causing an esthetic issue.…”
