Fluoride exposure combinations and caries in permanent dentition among Finnish children

Abstract: A representative sample (2865 persons, 7–16 years old) of children visiting municipal denial clinics was studied. Caries diagnoses were made by local dentists; structured questionnaires were used to collect data on fluoride and sugar exposures. Fluoridated pipe water was used by 26% of the children, 63% had supervised fluoride rinses and/or paintings, and 69% used fluoridated dentifrice. Water fluoridation prevented caries best. No major differences were observed between single and combined applications of dif… Show more

“…The results of this study are similar to those of several investigations in which the effects of fluoride tnouthdnsing have been evaluated in the current environment of increased ambient fluoride and decreased caries experience (52)(53)(54)(55)(56). Although these ftndings upheld the hypothesis that fluoride mouthrinse was more effective in preventing tooth decay among the high caries than the low caries group, the difference was not as large as had been expected.…”

“…Keeping in mind the frequent exposure to fluoride from fluoridated toothpastes with the same or even higher fluoride content as rinses, it would not be surprising if fort nightly rinsing had only a minor addi tional effect on caries. In fact, in some re cent cross-sectional studies [Hausen et al, 1981;Hausen, 1984] and clinical trials [Blinkhorn et al, 1983;Poulsen et al, 1984] rinsing combined with the use of flu oridated toothpastes was found to pro duce no significant caries prevention.…”

“…The effect of fluoride mouthrinses is well established [review in Birkeland and Torell, 1978]. However, some recent studies have questioned the effectiveness of rinses in children using fluoridated toothpastes [Hausen et al, 1981;Blinkhorn et al, 1983;Hausen, 1984;Poulsen et al, 1984], In Finland rin sing is often supervised by poorly moti vated teachers, and compliance is likely to vary from class to class. According to Hausen [1984], the coverage of the nation wide mouthrinsing programme was only 44% in the year 1982.…”

“…Since birth all children had been exposed to opti mally fluoridated drinking water (1.0-1.2 ppm) in Kuopio. Fluoridated toothpastes are commonly used in Finland, including Kuopio where 69°/o of the children used them in 1977 [Hausen et al, 1981).…”
