Hydroxyapatite (HA) is one of the most commonly used coating materials for metal implants. However, following high-temperature deposition, HA easily decomposes into an unstable phase or forms an amorphous phase, and hence, the long-term stability of the implant is reduced. Accordingly, the present study investigates the use of fluorapatite (FA) fortified with 20 wt% alumina (a-Al 2 O 3 ) as an alternative biomedical coating material. The coatings are deposited on Ti6Al4V substrates using a Nd:YAG laser cladding process performed with laser powers and travel speeds of 400 W/200 mm/min, 800 W/400 mm/min and 1200 W/600 mm/min, respectively. The results show that for all of the specimens, a strong metallurgical bond is formed at the interface between the coating layer and the transition layer due to melting and diffusion. The XRD analysis results reveal that the cladding layers in all of the specimens consist mainly of FA, b-TCP, CaF 2 , Ti and h-Al 2 O 3 phases. In addition, the cladding layers of the specimens prepared using laser powers of 400 and 800 W also contain CaTiO 3 and CaAl 2 O 4 , while that of the specimen clad using a power of 1200 W contains TTCP and CaO. Following immersion in simulated body fluid for 14 days, all of the specimens precipitate dense bone-like apatite and exhibit excellent bioactivity. However, among all of the specimens, the specimen that is prepared with a laser power of 800 W shows the best biological activity due to the presence of residual FA, apatite-generating CaTiO 3 and a rough cladding layer surface.

Abstract:How transition of fluorine from orally applied sealant into dental matrix occurs and inhibits caries remains unknown. In the current study, we investigated mechanism of caries protection evaluating movement of fluoride ions from sustained-releasing fluoride sealant by EPMA from a crystallographic point and also from inorganic chemical view. Furthermore, we also evaluated differences of 2 kinds of sealant as a fluoride source, which have different releasing mechanism.Our results demonstrated that fluoride ion released from sealant abundantly accumulated in porous structure of tooth. From this result, it was considered that fluoride ion contributed to caries inhibition by infiltrating into porous structure appeared due to decalcification and enhancing pH environment. This result suggests thinking morphological viewpoint upon efficiency of fluorine in clinical dentistry for caries. When 2 different sealant materials were compared, GI-based sealant significantly released more fluoride ion than resin-based fluorine. Moreover GI-based sealant fluoride ion infiltrated significantly much more into decalcified area than resinbased fluorine. Thus in clinical dentistry, selection of GI-based fluoride ion at early periods and then alternation to long-term keeping resin-based fluorine should be considered to treat caries in a better way.

The first purpose of present study was to compare the anticariogenic effect of compomer, resin modified glass ionomer cement and composite (RMGIC).The second purpose was to evaluate the recently introduced methods, which use confocal scanning microscope, in detecting initial caries around restoration.2×4×1.5mm cavities were prepared from the recently extracted 50 human teeth on the buccal or lingual surface. The prepared teeth were randomly devided into 5 groups and restored with each filling material. Group 1: Dyract AP, Group 2: compoglass F, Group 3: F2000, Group 4: Z100, Group 5:Fuji Ⅱ LC. The teeth were stored for 30 days in the distilled water, then stored in the buffer solution for artificial caries development; pH 4.3, lactic acid 100 mM, calcium 16 mM, phosphate 8mM, sodium azide 3mM. Then, the samples were sectioned longitudinally and examined with confical scanning microscope. The results showed that the use of compomer and resin modified glass ionomer cement showed caries inhibition zone whereas the composite did not. There was no difference in the width of caries inhibition zone between compomers and RMGIC. The confocal scanning microscope was useful in detecting initial caries around restoration.
