Fluorescent hydrogel formation from carboxyphenyl-terpyridine

Abstract: We report the analysis of a novel terpyridine based supramolecular hydrogel which shows fluorescent properties in the gel but not in the sol form; the gel forms in a narrow pH range in aqueous solutions specifically in the presence of sodium ions, and contains between 98% and 99.2% water.

“…1a displays the fluorescence spectra of nile red in the SC4AD-water system. 10 By simply mixing and shaking equal volumes of SC4AD micelles and PVA-MV solution for a few seconds, the aqueous solution immediately turned into a soft hydrogel that could not flow down in the inverted vial. 1a, the fluorescence intensity enhances with increasing the SC4AD concentration, indicating the formation of amphiphilic aggregates upon entrapping of hydrophobic nile red into the hydrophobic region.…”

“…Hcptpyi saditopic linear ligand containing large p-conjugated systemt hat can be synthesized from methyl p-formylbenzoate and 2-acetylpyridine in the presence of ammonia. [7] The luminescent materialw as preparedb ys onicating am ixture of EuCl 3 ·6H 2 Oa nd Hcptpyi na nhydrous ethanol for severalm inutes at room temperature. Interestingly, awhite opaque gel is formed when the concentration of ethanoli nt he mixture is 90-99wt% (Scheme 1b and c).…”
