“…Other chemicals have been isolated from rat fur, such as tryptophan and kynurenine, and they too are fluorescent 20 , 21 . Aside from pigments, keratin is a fibrous protein found in epidermic structures that glows yellow-green under UV 7 , 18 , 22 , 23 . Keratinised structures seem to resist the wear of digging 24 .…”

“…Most of the organic materials associated with the pharma and bioindustry have their fluorescence response in the UV. These include API, excipients, 1-ring aromatic compounds with or without various functional groups, aromatic amino acids, bacterial spores, vegetative bacterial cells with cellular components, two-ring aromatics, nitrogen-based heterocyclic compounds, and 3, 4, or 5 ring polyaromatic hydrocarbons. DUV laser-induced fluorescence measurement using a portable device can be used to identify samples in different industries like food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and semiconductor/thin-film manufacturing since DUV excitation evokes fluorescence from a large variety of samples. The technique also has potential applications in product quality testing and control, online process monitoring, environmental science, forensic crime scene investigation, and cleaning validation in pharma and bio industries.…”
