Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer (FLORIS) for ESA FLEX Mission

Abstract: The Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) mission has been selected as ESA's 8th Earth Explorer mission. The primary objectives of the mission are to provide global estimates of vegetation fluorescence, actual photosynthetic activity, and vegetation stress. FLEX will fly in tandem formation with Sentinel-3 providing ancillary data for atmospheric characterization and correction, vegetation related spectral indices, and land surface temperature. The purpose of this manuscript is to present its scientific payload, FLORIS… Show more

“…However, a general constraint to this approach is the coarse spatial and temporal resolution of current global satellite‐based SIF records, which may not effectively capture subgrid‐scale heterogeneity. These limitations are being addressed through planned improvements in satellite remote sensing and finer landscape‐level SIF observations (Coppo et al, ). These data are contributing to the development of a new generation of physical models and LUE algorithms for estimation and extrapolation of SIF and GPP calculations that are more directly comparable with both satellite SIF observations and tower carbon flux measurements (Thum et al, ).…”

“…The FLEX measurements are performed from space by the FLuORescence Imaging Spectrometer (FLORIS) 3 . The FLEX payload will be mounted on a medium/small size platform and fly in a Sun synchronous orbit at a height of about 815 km, in tandem with one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites.…”
