Tadmor is a Syrian barley landrace that has adapted to semi-arid environments. Its leaves are pale green because of a 30% decrease in the chlorophyll and the carotenoid content of the chloroplasts (leading to a 7·5% decrease in light absorption) compared with barley genotypes that are not adapted to harsh Mediterranean climatic conditions (e.g. Plaisant). This difference in pigment content was attenuated during growth of the plants in strong light, but was strongly amplified when strong light was combined with a high growth temperature. The low pigment content of Tadmor leaves was not associated with significant changes in the pigment distribution between the photosystems or between the reaction centres of the photosystems and their associated chlorophyll antennae. No significant difference in the photosynthetic activity (O 2 production per unit absorbed light) was observed between Tadmor and Plaisant. The conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin in strong light and its reversal in darkness were much faster and operated at a higher capacity in Tadmor leaves compared with Plaisant leaves, resulting in an increased photostability of photosystem II in the former leaves. The accelerated xanthophylls interconversion in the Syrian landrace was associated with, and possibly related to, an increased fluidity of the thylakoid membranes. The lipid peroxide level was lower in Tadmor compared with Plaisant. In contrast, no difference was found in the non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence between the two barley genotypes. The data indicate that the pale green Syrian landrace is equipped to survive excessive irradiance through a passive reduction of the light absorptance of its leaves, which mitigates the heating effects of strong light, and through the active protection of its photochemical apparatus by a rapid xanthophyll cycling.

Alterations in fluidity of thylakoid membranes isolated from spinach chloroplasts in response to sodium bisulfite (NaHSO 3 ), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and free linoleic acid (LA) were investigated by means of a fluorescence polarization study with 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene as the fluorescence probe. A decrease in fluidity and an increase in microviscosity of membrane were caused by NaHSO 3 and H 2 O 2 treatment. In contrast, SDS and BSA were found to increase thylakoid membranes fluidity and decrease microviscosity, in which the corresponding correlation coefficients were -0.9995 to -0.9516 (SDS) and -0.9359 (BSA), respectively. No changes in thylakoid membranes fluidity induced by free LA were found until its concentration above 5 mM where the polarization value (P value) declined (increased fluidity). The results suggest that the changes in thylakoids membrane fluidity might depend on the characteristics, mechanism and extent of the interactions between membrane components and compounds added.

Farnesylacetone is a natural terpene extracted from androgenic glands of the crustacean Curctnus maenas and is capable of inhibiting proliferation, notably in transformed mammalian cells. Flow cytometry with three lipophilic probes, diphenylhexatriene, trimethylammonium-diphenylhexatriene, and Nile red, has revealed modifications of the lipidic metabolism in transformed FR3T3-mTT4 rat fibroblasts treated by fatnesylacetone, including changes in membrane fluidity. Farnesylacetone strongly increased the number of neutral lipidic droplets in the cytoplasm. Moreover, after prolonged terpene treatment, the membrane hction of cells contained a substantial level of triglycerides. Famesylacetone provoked an immediate but transitory increase in membrane fluidity of the cell membrane. The change in measured lipid fluidity appears to be due to these triglycerides rather than to the phospholipids. o 1995 wiley-L~S, I~C .
