El propósito de este trabajo, es el prediseño de un túnel de viento de circuito abierto subsónico para la Universidad Tecnológicade Panamá; para el desarrollo de futuras investigaciones como lo son el diseño de pequeños aerogeneradores e investigaciones de dispersión deemisiones contaminantes, entre otros. Para ello se requirió realizar una extensa investigación de los modelos existentes y las limitaciones de losdiversos componentes que conforman un túnel de viento con esta configuración, basándose en las pautas y lineamiento existentes a la fecha y conel apoyo de la dinámica de fluidos computacional. El empleo de los modelos y el apoyo de dichos métodos numéricos permitió obtener unprediseño funcional que teóricamente satisface los requerimientos iniciales, y permitió desarrollar una correlación para el diseño de lacontracción, propiciando nuevos caminos de investigación con el fin de mejorar el rendimiento del ventilador axial.

Abstract-This paper describes a tool developed for estimating performance of suction pumps for Hybrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC) with constraints related to real aircraft application.The suction pump has three components: a compressor, a generator and a motor. The last two must fit the overall aircraft electric system, which is unknown at this stage. Therefore, general linear approximations are used. The compressor is independent from other systems and is optimized specifically for HLFC. The models have been validated with data from previous HLFC concept studies.The tool, develope d in Python, provides sufficient details to ensure the constraints are satisfied, while still requiring minimal computational efforts and allowing the user to choose freely any optimization variables, constraints and objectives functions. This represents the first step toward a system-level optimization of HLFC concepts.

ABSTRACT. Wind-packed snow in the form of slabs or crusts is an important part of alpine and polar snow covers. Yet, the formation process of such layers is poorly understood. For example, it remains unclear whether drifting snow is necessary for wind-packing or not. A better understanding of wind-packing could improve snow-cover models and avalanche danger forecasts and contribute to the assessment of mass balances in polar regions. We designed a closed-circuit, obround wind tunnel to study the process of wind crust formation. A SnowMicroPen was used to measure how the hardness of the snow evolved. The results show that no crust forms without saltation. Drifting snow is a necessary but not sufficient condition for wind-packing. The dynamics of erosion and deposition appear to be equally important.
