Fluid-induced rotordynamic forces and instabilities

Abstract: SUMMARYIn the late 1970s, the authors began a collaboration with our colleague Tom Caughey that helped define a new set of fluid-structure interaction phenomena in turbomachines, namely fluid-induced rotordynamic forces and instabilities. That collaboration and the 31 joint "ABC" papers it produced epitomized Tom Caughey's genius and we reprise it here in his honor. The design of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) pushed beyond the boundaries of many known technologies. In particular, the rotating speeds and … Show more

“…Therefore, the flow field simulation not only considered the impeller rotation but the whirl motion as well. The impeller whirl model [42] was introduced as shown in Fig. 2, where e is an eccentricity of the mixed-flow pump impeller and adjusted as 0 mm, 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm.…”

“…The tests are performed in distinct operation conditions to accentuate distinct effects to demonstrate the applicability potential. In further studies, it is intended to apply a two‐layer (hybrid) control, where the feedforward technique actuates to improve the overall performance of a stabilizing robust feedback loop to deal, specifically, with the oil whip limitation described in the literature …”

“…This effect was known as the Lomakin effect [17]. The effect was well studied both experimentally [18,19] and numerically [20,21]. The main goal of the paper was to study the influence of the wear ring clearance gap on the transient flow in the pump.…”
