The analysis of three diff erent regions of the South-Pyrenean fold-and-thrust belt reveals that during the Tertiary compression the hydrological system was compartmentalised in time and space. During the early-middle Eocene, when the thrust front aff ected marine soft-sediments in the Ainsa basin, the thrust fault zones were dominated by formation fl uids derived from Eocene marine waters trapped in the underlying Eocene marls, although infl uences of meteoric waters were also present. During the middle-late Eocene, when the thrust front emplaced marine rocks over continental redbeds in the eastern Catalan basin (L'Escala thrust), the thrust fault zones were dominated by meteoric fl uids. These fl uids fl owed preferentially along these faults, draining laterally the meteoric fl uids and acting as barriers hindering their fl owing towards more external parts of the belt. During the Oligocene, the most external part of the fold-and-thrust belt in the eastern Catalan basin developed on top of a salt detachment horizon. The thrust front aff ected continental materials of late Eocene-Oligocene age. At this moment, the thrusts were conduits for meteoric fl uids arriving from the surface and also for evolved meteoric fl uids migrating over short distance upwards after being in contact with the underlying evaporitic beds.Most of the fractures show a similar sequence of microfractures. Microfractures of stage 1 formed when the sediment was poorly lithifi ed. Microfractures of stage 2 represent the main episode of vein formation which developed when a progressive induration of the host sediment occurred. During microfracture stage 3, formed in an extensional regime, the host sediment was more indurated. The repetition of this sequence of microfractures in diff erent fracture generations of the same outcrop indicates that the sediment induration was restricted to the vicinity of the vein. Away from the veins, the sediment remained poorly lithifi ed during the entire deformation cycle. Calcite cement within the host rock precipitated later than the syn-compressive veins, when the sediment was more indurated.Elemental geochemistry and stable isotopes of the calcite veins indicates that early generation of microfractures is infi lled by local fl uids (either marine or meteoric), whereas external fl uids (meteoric or evolved meteoric) infi lled the main compressive stage of microfractures. The hot temperature of these fl uids (157ºC to 183ºC in the Atiart-Arro example) indicates their circulation through deep parts of the thrust belt.

The structural complexity of the Spanish territory hampered the development of large sedimentary basins with a time-space evolution that could have allowed the accumulation and preservation of large hydrocarbon deposits. In spite of this, including the few exploratory wells drilled (3.13 wells / 1,000 square miles), Spain (including on and offshore) has up to eight geological systems with present or past commercial hydrocarbon fields: the Gulf of Cadiz-Guadalquivir Miocene foreland basin, the Cretaceous of the Betic ranges, the Jurassic and Lower Miocene of the Western Mediterranean Sea, the Albian sands of the Rioja Paleogene foreland basin, the Platform-Basin of the onshore Cantabrian basin, the Ypresian of the Pyrenees thrust belts, and the westward continuity of the Aquitania foreland basin in the Gulf of Biscay. There are other remaining areas that supposedly contain an exploratory potential that could be much higher than the systems mentioned above: the deep waters of the Mediterranean and Cantabrian seas and the Atlantic Ocean of the Canary Islands, the Mesozoic covered by the olistostromes of the Betic ranges, the onshore Triassic sandy reservoirs and the onshore Carboniferous sub-basins found throughout the mainland. These areas have an even lower level of exploration (0.26 wells / 1,000 square miles).

Significance of Fracture-Filling Rose-Like Calcite Crystal Clusters in the SE Pyrenees

Fracture-filling rose-like clusters of bladed calcite crystals are found in the northern sector of the Cadí thrust sheet (SE Pyrenees). This unusual calcite crystal morphology has been characterized by using optical and electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, δ18O, δ13C, 87Sr/86Sr, clumped isotopes, and major and rare earth elements + yttrium (REEs + Y) analysis. Petrographic observations and powder X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that these bladed crystals are mainly made of massive rhombic crystals with the conventional (104) faces, as well as of possibly younger, less abundant, and smaller laminar crystals displaying (108) and/or ( 1 ¯ 08) rhombic faces. Raman analysis of liquid fluid inclusions indicates the presence of aromatic hydrocarbons and occasionally alkanes. Clumped isotopes thermometry reflects that bladed calcite precipitated from meteoric fluids at ~60–65 °C. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios and major elements and REEs content of calcite indicate that these fluids interacted with Eocene marine carbonates. The presence of younger ‘nailhead’ calcite indicates later migration of shallow fresh groundwater. The results reveal that rose-like calcite clusters precipitated, at least in the studied area, due to a CO2 release by boiling of meteoric waters that mixed with benzene and aromatic hydrocarbons. This mixing decreased the boiling temperature at ~60–65 °C. The results also suggest that the high Sr content in calcite, and probably the presence of proteins within hydrocarbons trapped in fluid inclusions, controlled the precipitation of bladed crystals with (104) rhombohedral faces.
