High-quality 3D seismic data are used to analyze the history of fault growth and hydrocarbon leakage in the Snøhvit Field, southwestern Barents Sea. The aim of this work is to evaluate the role of tectonic fracturing as a mechanism driving fluid-flow in the study area. To achieve this aim, an integrated approach including seismic interpretation, multiple seismic attribute analysis, fault modeling and displacement analysis was used.The six major faults in the study area are dip-slip normal faults which are characterized by complex lateral and vertical segmentation. The three main episodes of fault reactivation interpreted were in late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian), early Cretaceous and Paleocene times. Fault reactivation in the study area is mainly through dip-linkage. Throw-distance plots of the representative faults also revealed along-strike linkage and multi-skewed C-type profiles. The throw profiles show that faults in the study area evolved through polycyclic activity involving both blind propagation, syn-sedimentary activity and that they have their maximum displacement at the reservoir zone. The expansion and growth indices provide evidence for coeval fault activity with sedimentation and interaction of the faults with a free surface during their evolution.

Abstract:A closely spaced set of high-resolution Chirp-Sonar and Sparker profiles and swath bathymetric data was acquired in 2013 for the I-AMICA Project off the Volturno River mouth (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) by the Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero (IAMC), National Research Council of Italy (CNR). The palaeo-topography of three key surfaces, represented by the bounding surfaces of the post-glacial lithosomes, was mapped by the interpolation of seismically detected reflectors. The morphology of the surface related to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) regression revealed the presence of fault linkages which defined a small-scale accommodation zone with an E-W trending interbasinal relative high. The observed set of oppositely dipping faults, NNWand ENE-directed, locally controlled the deposition of the paralic/deltaic bodies during the post-glacial rise in sea level, as testified by their wedge-shaped geometries and shifting depocentres. The deformation may be linked to the Campi Flegrei caldera collapse following the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) eruption and aged 15 ka BP. The relevant thickness of the Transgressive System Tract (TST) testifies to an increased sediment yield and intense reworking in coastal areas, probably driven by the high volcanoclastic supply during volcanic paroxysm, almost coeval with the post-glacial transgression. Fluid escape features linked to an E-W striking fluid front at the outer shelf suggest the presence of an hydrothermal system controlled by the predominant direction of normal to oblique Quaternary-active faults and by lithologic discontinuities across the sedimentary pile.

SUMMARYDeep sea pockmarks underlain by chimney-like or pipe structures that contain methane hydrate are abundant along the Norwegian continental margin. In such hydrate provinces the interaction between hydrate formation and fluid flow has significance for benthic ecosystems and possibly climate change. The Nyegga region, situated on the western Norwegian continental slope, is characterized by an extensive pockmark field known to accommodate substantial methane gas hydrate deposits. The aim of this study is to detect and delineate both the gas hydrate and free gas reservoirs at one of Nyegga's pockmarks.In 2012, a marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) survey was performed at a pockmark in this region, where high-resolution three-dimensional seismic data were previously collected in 2006. Two-dimensional CSEM inversions were computed using the data acquired by ocean bottom electrical field receivers. Our results, derived from un- constrained and seismically constrained CSEM inversions, suggest the presence of two distinctive resistivity anomalies beneath the pockmark: a shallow vertical anomaly at the underlying pipe structure, likely due to gas hydrate accumulation, and a laterally extensive anomaly attributed to a free gas zone below the base of the gas hydrate stability zone. This work contributes to a robust characterization of gas hydrate deposits within sub-seafloor fluid flow pipe structures.
