Fluid Biomarkers for Predicting the Prognosis of Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract: Liver cirrhosis is the terminal stage of most chronic liver conditions, with a high risk of mortality. Careful evaluation of the prognosis of cirrhotic patients and providing precise management are crucial to reduce the risk of mortality. Although the liver biopsy and hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) can efficiently evaluate the prognosis of cirrhotic patients, their application is limited due to the invasion procedures. Child-Pugh score and the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score had been wi… Show more

“…In adult patients in intensive care units, elevated LBP concentrations are correlated with the onset of bacteremia or severe sepsis and septic shock. In the present paper LBP is used not only for diagnosis, but also for monitoring post operatory evolution and as a prognostic factor for development of a septic complication [40][41][42].…”

“…Biological markers have the potential to improve the diagnostic and prognostic capacity of clinical assessment and the conventional inflammation tests [42,43]. Monitoring serum concentrations in dynamics is much more useful than isolated inpatient dosing.…”

“…In recent years, continuous efforts have been made to investigate the prognostic value of blood biomarkers for CLD patients, including those with HCC, and promising results have been reported. 6 Here we describe our institution's use of noninvasive blood biomarkers related to different prognostic functions, including the rate of survival and the development of various complications, and present a comprehensive review of the literature.…”

“…1 Because of the high fatality rate associated with LC, there have been many attempts to identify accurate prognostic models that will help make better clinical decisions, but these attempts have not led to satisfactory results. 2,3 Histopathologic findings and hepatic venous pressure gradient may reflect disease severity, but their clinical use is limited due to their invasiveness. 4 Widely used noninvasive parameters include the Child-Pugh score and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score-the MELD system is noted for its use in liver transplant allocation.…”
