FluCaP: A Heuristic Search Planner for First-Order MDPs

Abstract: We present a heuristic search algorithm for solving first-order Markov Decision Processes (FOMDPs). Our approach combines first-order state abstraction that avoids evaluating states individually, and heuristic search that avoids evaluating all states. Firstly, in contrast to existing systems, which start with propositionalizing the FOMDP and then perform state abstraction on its propositionalized version we apply state abstraction directly on the FOMDP avoiding propositionalization. This kind of abstraction is… Show more

“…The conjunctive form of states prohibits universal quantification and explicit negation (of either formulas, or single atoms), and partitionings can only be specified non-declaratively using decision lists, but together with constraint atoms the language is powerful enough for many interesting RMDPs. Related approaches such as the ones by Hölldobler et al (2006) and are based on similar, existentially quantified languages.…”

“…A notable exception is the related relational IDP system FLUCAP by Hölldobler et al (2006) in which the creation of new variables is allowed. 40 In fact, it is also possible to have a goal on(X, Y) that merely states that some block should be on something.…”

“…Only a simple boxworld example with human-assisted computation is demonstrated in the SDP work, but the method serves as a basis for FOALP (Sanner & Boutilier, 2009), which replaces exact techniques with heuristic approximation in order to scale the techniques to benchmark planning domains. Application of FOVI on planning domains is only demonstrated on the colored blocksworld benchmark, and is limited to under 10 blocks (Holldobler, Karabaev, & Skvortsova, 2006).…”

“…Taking advantage of such relational structure, [2] developed the SDP algorithm that was later elaborated in several formalisms and systems [9], [5], [13], [17]. One of the important ideas in SDP was to represent stochastic actions as deterministic alternatives under nature's control.…”
