Flowering Plants Preferred by Bumblebees (BombusLatr.) in the Botanical Garden of Medicinal Plants in Wrocław

Abstract: A b s t r a c t Due to fewer bumblebees in rural areas these days, it is necessary to look for alternative habitats for the active protection of these very important pollinators. The research was carried out in The Botanical Garden of Medicinal Plants, in Wrocław, Poland. In the garden, approximately 2000 plant species were cultivated, of which 185 were visited by bumblebees. Amongst them, 57 plant species were deemed very attractive and were determined to be indicators for 7 bumblebee species. Indicator speci… Show more

“…Therefore, a special role in urban areas is attributed to such green areas, which accumulate vast numbers of flowering plants. The primary, but not the only factor which affects the abundance of bumblebees, is flora richness (Widmer and Schmid-Hempel 1999;Steffan-Dewenter et al 2002;Diaz-Ferero et al 2012;Sikora and Kelm 2012;Sikora et al 2016). It also turns out that not only do habitat characteristics have an impact on bumblebees biodiversity, but also factors in the spatial landscape scale, such as the areas which surround particular habitats (Hatfield and LeBuhn 2007).…”

“…Increasing bee species richness is often linked to floral species richness [23], which frequently increases with the degree of urbanization [4,24,25]. Within a city, urban greenspaces offer a varied breadth and quality of dietary resources [12,[26][27][28][29]. Exotic plant species can make up a substantial portion of the floral resources found in urban areas [30].…”
