Flow Unsteadiness and Pressure Pulsations in a Nuclear Reactor Coolant Pump

Abstract: A nuclear reactor coolant pump (RCP) [1], the device in the reactor core and the steam generator that transfers the heat energy [2], is the "heart" of a nuclear reactor driving the circulation flow of the coolant in the main loop [3]. The nuclear reactor coolant pump is the only rotating part of the nuclear island, so it belongs in a nuclear safety grade one facility. Moreover, it is also the main energy-consuming equipment in the nuclear power plants, which must be guaranteed to operate continuously over a lo… Show more

“…In Figure 16, points A-G are taken as an example to illustrate the distribution of the monitoring points evenly in the circumferential direction. It is indicated that the pressure pulsation amplitude from the impeller inlet to the vane first increases and then decreases (Figures 17-19), which is similar to the results in the research literature (Ni, Yang, Gao, Zhang, & Li, 2016). The distribution characteristics of pressure pulsation frequency in both uniform and non-uniform inflow conditions are basically similar, the only difference being the magnitude of the amplitude.…”

“…Although the frequency of nuclear accidents is really low, the severity of it is enormous (Wheatley et al, 2016). As one of the most important equipment in the nuclear power plants, the stability and reliability of the nuclear reactor coolant pump will be related to the safe and stable operation of the whole nuclear power plant (Ni et al, 2016).…”

“…A lot of works have been devoted to analyze the generation and transmission of pressure fluctuations through such pumps [4][5][6][7]. Chu S et al [8,9] considered that impeller-volute interaction of centrifugal pumps is the main source of pressure fluctuation.…”
