Understanding how nonelectroactive bacteria (non-EAB) perceive and respond to electro-stimulation is pivotal for optimizing electro-biostimulation systems. Here, Escherichia coli, a representative non-EAB, was employed to investigate its electrical response behavior and molecular regulatory mechanism across a spectrum of current densities. Accelerated bacterial growth was observed at current densities ranging from 2 to 10 A m −2 with a maximum growth rate of 1.89 h −1 at 10 A m −2 . Moderate electrostimulation (10 A m −2 ) promoted NADH regeneration and adenosine triphosphate synthesis by modulating intracellular glycolytic flux, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and electron transport chain (ETC), while cells became inactivated at 20 A m −2 mainly due to the overall inhibition of the TCA cycle and domino collapse of ETC. The presence of reductive stress caused by electro-stimulation not only promoted NADPH and glutamine consumption but also impacted the material exchange fluxes by altering outer membrane proteins (OMPs) from β-fold to β-corner. Additionally, extracellular polymeric substances served as the electron transient medium to sense electro-stimulation. The study revealed that non-EAB possessed approaches different from EET to sense and respond to electro-stimulation. The improved comprehension of regulatory mechanisms governing catabolic pathways under electro-stimulation holds promise for developing more efficient electro-biostimulation systems, with implications for environmental biotechnology applications.

In this study, the occurrence of the most common types of bacteria and fungi on the surfaces of production lines, raw materials and finished products in plastics processing plants was investigated. In addition, the ability of selected bacterial strains to form biofilms and to degrade PS surfaces was determined. The surfaces examined mainly contained aerobic mesophilic bacteria (42.0% of the samples), followed by moulds (30.0%) and representatives of the genera Bacillus (28.3%) and Staphylococcus (19.9%). Growth on the solid medium with polystyrene was confirmed in 63 (63.4%) of the 96 selected strains, but only 3 (3.0%) of them were able to form a clear zone around the colonies. The highest weight loss of polystyrene was observed in the presence of Bacillus strains. The degree of degradation after 30 and 60 days ranged from 0.12–0.78% and from 0.21–2.15%, respectively. The number of living cells in biofilms on surfaces was lowest for the Gram-negative strains Burkholderia and Moraxella and highest for most Bacillus and some Micrococcus strains. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed differences in the ratios of vibrational bands after exposure to bacterial strains, although no oxygen-containing functional groups were observed on the surface of polystyrene samples. The average contact angle values of polystyrene surfaces exposed to the tested bacterial strains decreased from 80.55 ± 0.39° to 73.64 ± 0.45° after 60 days of incubation. Some isolated bacterial strains from plastic production plants show the potential for more intensive degradation of such materials, which could have an impact on the quality and shelf life of plastic products.

The aim of this investigation was to study the impact of various reaction parameters on wastewater taken from Al-Wathba water treatment plant on Tigris River in south of Baghdad, Iraq with sodium hypochlorite solution. The parameters studied were sodium hypochlorite dose, contact time, initial fecal coliform bacteria concentration, temperature, and pH. In a batch reactor, different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite solution were used to disinfect 1L of water. The amount of hypochlorite ions in disinfected water was measured using an Iodimetry test for different reaction times, whereas the Most Probable Number (MPN) test was used to determine the concentration of coliform bacteria. Total Plate Count (TPC) was utilized in this study to count the number of colonies of common bacteria. Reaction variables that were examined showed that the increase in temperature, pH, and reaction time caused the concentration of Coliform bacteria to decrease, which in turn caused an accumulation-related increase in OCl- concentration. The optimum values of temperature and reaction pH were determined to be 8 and 29o C respectively. The kinetics of the reaction was examined in this study, and the results showed that Selleck model's order of reaction is two, with rate constants of 1.3791x10-5, 3.0806x10-5, and 5.738x10-5 L/(mole min) at 20o, 29o, and 37o C, respectively.
