Flow coupling effects in jet-in-crossflow flowfields

Abstract: The combustor designer is typically required to design liner orifices that effectively mix air jets with crossflow effluent. CFD combustor analysis is typically used in the design process; however the jets are usually assumed to enter the combustor with a uniform velocity and turbulence profile. The jet-mainstream flow coupling is usually neglected because of the computational expense. This CFD study was performed to understand the effect of jet-mainstream flow coupling, and to assess the accuracy of jet bound… Show more

“…Improving upon previous LES studies, the main aim of the present work is to illustrate and compare the predictive capabilities of LES in both uncoupled and coupled simulations of the chosen geometry. Whilst such comparisons have been previously made in the context of RANS [3,18], LES appears not to have been used for this purpose.…”

“…The effects of simulating the core/annulus coupling mechanism have been previously studied by Manners [15], Baker [4], Crocker et al [6], Bain et al [3] and McGuirk and Spencer [18] using a k-ε model. These studies show the k-ε model to considerably under predict turbulence levels within the combustor core and provide a poor representation of the upstream RFZ characteristics.…”
