Requirement Elicitation is key activity of requirement engineering and has a strong impact on design and other phases of software development life cycle. Poor requirement engineering practices lead to project failure. A sound requirement elicitation process is the foundation for the overall quality of software product. Due to criticality and high impact of this phase on overall success and failure of projects, it is very necessary to perform the requirements elicitation activities in a perfect and specific manner. The most difficult and demanding jobs during Requirement Elicitation phase is to select appropriate and specific technique from a wide array of techniques and tools. In this paper, a new approach is proposed using an artificial neural network for selection of requirement elicitation technique from a wide variety of tools and techniques that are available. The training of Neural Network is done by back propagation algorithm. The trained and resultant network can be used as a base for selection of requirement elicitation techniques.

Value stream mapping (VSM) is a method to identify waste and activities that do not add value. One of its main disadvantages is that the parameters used in the process and material flows are deterministic. The motivation of this research is to improve the reliability of the estimation of the lead time in VSM, transitioning from a static model to a dynamic model that incorporates uncertainty and imprecision in the data, as well as to develop a novel dynamic and fuzzy value stream mapping (DFVSM) based on integrating system dynamics and fuzzy logic. One of the main contributions of this research is to develop a fuzzy system in the same system dynamics interface that incorporates uncertainty and vagueness to the efficiency and effectiveness percentage variable (OEE%) to increase the reliability of the delivery time planning. The stages of DFVSM are explicitly described and applied to real data for a textile company in southern Guanajuato. A sensitivity analysis of the proposed model was integrated which identifies the critical factors for the delivery of the order, and achievable times were proposed for the delivery times of the supplier and the client, thus reducing the expected delivery time by 28%. One of the relevant conclusions of this work is that, to plan the lead time of an order, the uncertainty of the main parameters such as supplier and customer shipping times be considered to satisfy the customer.

In agile software development, functionality is added to the system in an incremental and iterative manner. Practitioners often rely on expert judgment to estimate the effort in this context. However, the impact of a change on the existing system can provide objective information to practitioners to arrive at an informed estimate. In this regard, we have developed a hybrid method, that utilizes change impact analysis information for improving effort estimation. We also developed an estimation model based on gradient boosted trees (GBT). In this study, we evaluate the performance and usefulness of our hybrid method with tool support and the GBT model in a live iteration at Insiders Technologies GmbH, a German software company. Additionally, the solution was also assessed for perceived usefulness and understandability in a study with graduate and post‐graduate students. The results from the industrial evaluation show that the proposed method produces more accurate estimates than only expert‐based or only model‐based estimates. Furthermore, both students and practitioners perceived the usefulness and understandability of the method positively.
