Background and Objective:For the sake of optimal beneficiation of the products formed in the chemical sequestration of CO 2 on silicates, extraction of the chromite has been carried out prior to carbonation, by flotation in a lab-scale column. Method:Industrial-grade olivine and serpentine were tested. Flow conditions e.g. gas flow rate, stirring, particle diameter of silicates, and physicochemical considerations (composition if the electrolyte solution) have been examined to optimize the separation efficiency in terms of chromite recovery or enrichment factor. Result:The high performance observed with chromite-enriched olivine allows a multistage flotation process from low-chromite minerals blends to be designed. Conclusion:The lower performance with native olivine was attributed to the existence of mixed chromite-silicate particles.

Effect of Depressants and Temperature on Bastnaesite and Monazite Flotation Separation from a Canadian Rare Earth Element (REE) Ore

A full factorial experimental design was conducted to investigate the effect of temperature and depressants on the flotation of monazite and bastnaesite from carbonate gangue minerals. Temperature, sodium silicate, and guar gum dosage were examined. Mineral reconstruction from energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) data was performed to quantify bastnaesite, monazite, and gangue mineral recoveries. Bastnaesite and monazite both follow first-order rates of recovery, with bastnaesite recovering faster and to a larger extent than monazite. The main gangue minerals were depressed together. Optimal separation efficiency was achieved using a larger Na2SiO3 dosage (2400 g/t), no guar gum addition, and a high temperature (75 °C). The rate of bastnaesite recovery increased with the temperature, while sodium silicate improved the ultimate recovery. An economic analysis was performed to evaluate the impact of increasing Rare Earth Element (REE) recovery by allowing a lower grade concentrate to be generated. Despite the high value of REEs, increasing recovery by producing a concentrate bearing more than 68 wt % carbonaceous gangue was uneconomical.

Based on the regulating behavior of Fe 3+ , flocculation and sedimentation tests of iron tailings slurry flocculated using 2 mg/L anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) were studied, including the tests of Fe 3+ dosage, regulating time, and pH. Flocculation-sedimentation tests showed that: a recommended addition of 56 mg/L Fe 3+ produced a surprisingly bad flocculation effect; sedimentation ability decreased with the increase of regulating time, however, the regulating ability during the first 1 min was low; Fe 3+ displayed a high regulating effect at pH 6-7, and then decreased with the increase of slurry pH. Size analysis demonstrated that the regulating ability of Fe 3+ was related to the change of floc size, which increased with the decrease of size. Zeta potential analysis and calculation showed that small concentrations of Fe 3+ and certain hydroxyl complex ions (such as Fe(OH) 2+ and Fe(OH) 2 + ) adsorbed onto the APAM molecular chains, resulting in a decreased charge density of the APAM molecules, and this electrostatic adsorption was able to make the polymer curl more easily. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic (FTIR) indicated the APAM on the hematite was slightly degraded into a monomer-like short-chain polymer while adding certain concentration of Fe 3+ . Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) imaging showed that the network structure of APAM molecules treated by Fe 3+ collapsed, and the APAM adsorption amount on hematite was significantly reduced. Therefore, the effect of Fe 3+ on the APAM could be recommended as a new method for desorption and degradation of the APAM contained in the tailings slurry or flocs.
