RESUMO: A lama vermelha é o resíduo obtido da produção da alumina por meio do processo Bayer, na digestão da bauxita pelo hidróxido de sódio. A alumina e extraída da bauxita, material muito utilizado na indústria por conter diversas propriedades como alta resistência química, resistência elétrica entre outros. Esse processo gera a lama vermelha, estima-se que a produção de alumina costuma originar entre 1 a 1,25 toneladas de resíduo. O objetivo deste trabalho realizado por meio de revisão bibliográfica foi conhecer as aplicações que a indústria destina a este sedimento, que em sua composição possui diversos elementos como Ferro, alumínio, titânio entre outros, sendo possível concluir que com os avanços da tecnologia foram ampliadas as formas de tratamento dos despojos, seja na agricultura ou na extração dos elementos com valor econômico, entretanto ainda existem poucos métodos concretos para que a indústria solucione este problema.

The Bayer process is the main method of alumina production worldwide. The use of low-quality bauxites for alumina production results in the formation of a significant amount of technogenic waste—bauxite residue (BR). The Bayer reductive method is one possible way to eliminate BR stockpiling, but it requires high-pressure leaching at temperatures higher than 220 °C. In this research, the possibility of boehmitic bauxite atmospheric pressure leaching at both the first and second stages or high-pressure leaching at the second stage with the simultaneous reduction of hematite to magnetite was investigated. Bauxite and solid residue after NaOH leaching were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, and Mössbauer spectroscopy methods. The first stage of leaching under atmospheric pressure with the addition of Fe(II) species in a strong alkali solution (330–400 g L–1 Na2O) resulted in a partial reduction of the iron minerals and an extraction of more than 60% of Si and 5–25% of Al (depending on caustic modulus of solution) after 1 h. The obtained desilicated bauxite was subjected to atmospheric leaching at 120 °C in a strong alkali solution (350 g L−1) or high-pressure leaching at 160–220 °C using the Bayer process mother liquor in order to obtain a concentrate with a magnetite content higher than 83 wt. %.

The effects of pyrite and diaspore with different particle sizes on the rheological properties of pulp with butyl xanthate added as a collector were studied, and the mechanism for rheological pyrite separation from diaspore by flotation was probed. The apparent viscosity of the diaspore pulp with different particle sizes was higher than that of pyrite, especially for -30 μm diaspore. Microfine diaspore was an important component affecting the apparent viscosity and yield stress of the diaspore-pyrite mixed pulp, and the pulp became a non-Newtonian fluid when the mass fraction of fine-grained diaspore in the mixed pulp was high. In this study, sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) was used to control the rheology of the mixed pulp and improve the pyrite flotation, and the S (sulfur) recovery rate first increased and then decreased with increasing SHMP concentration. The apparent viscosity of the pulp decreased by 3.01% and the S recovery rate increased by 34.83% when the amount of added SHMP was 0.05 mg/kg. The apparent viscosity with 0.50 mg/kg SHMP was 21.76% lower than that seen with the addition of 0.05 mg/kg SHMP, but the S recovery rate was also reduced by 14.94%. Further research showed that the increased SHMP concentration led to increases in the electronegativities of the particle surface and the repulsive force between particles, which prevented agglomeration of the particles, reduced the apparent viscosity and yield stress of the mixed pulp, promoted collisions between the pyrite particles and the bubbles, and reduced the resistance of the air bubbles to flotation.
