Floristic composition and stand structure of mangrove forests with varying vegetation conditions in Sungai Apit, Siak, Riau, Indonesia

Abstract: Abstract. Fatonah, Hamidy R, Mulyadi A, Efriyeldi. 2021. Floristic composition and stand structure of mangrove forests with varying vegetation conditions in Sungai Apit, Siak, Riau, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3972-3983. Mangrove forest in Sungai Apit Sub-district, Siak District, Riau is one of mangrove ecosystems that is still partly natural with some parts being damaged or rehabilitated. Degraded mangrove forest is a mangrove forest that has been disturbed by human activities and natural factors. This study… Show more

“…Still, they are associated with creating vegetation assembly and true mangrove vegetation. The vegetation of mangrove associates tended to be more abundant in the opposite direction to the shoreline in which the salt-tolerant condition is possibly a factor affecting the distribution of the "mangrove associates" vegetation (Kathiresan and Bingham 2001;Bai et al 2021;Fatonah et al 2021;Song et al 2023).…”

“…This phenomenon can be explained that the family of Rhizophoraceae was the superior vegetation in mangroves as some publications mentioned that species belonging to this family grow dominantly in the mangrove forest (Lillo et al 2019;Yudha et al 2021;Canty et al 2022). The character of reproductive mechanisms such as vivipary creating propagules of the vegetation leading to seedling establishment successfully occurring in mangroves (Kathiresan and Bingham 2001;Feller et al 2010;Otero et al 2020) (Fatonah et al 2021). The shallow water is favorable to this recruitment process since the areas of the Bintuni mangrove, especially in the nature reserve, mainly located in the gulf corner, make it possible to be a seedling establishment zone.…”

“…Such was the case due to the dominance of R. apiculata in all sampling locations. Species evenness values range from 0 to 1 and are categorized as uneven (0.00-0.40), moderate evenness (0.41-0.60), and high evenness (0.61-1.00) (Fatonah et al 2021). A value equal to or close to 1 means the species are evenly distributed.…”

“…Information on stand characteristics is relevant to management as they relate to forest functions and conditions, such as degradation stage, recovery time, and carbon storage (Ali 2019;Fatonah et al 2021). In Davao Region, particularly on the coasts of Davao Gulf, floristic studies of mangroves were already conducted in the provinces of Davao Oriental (Pototan et al 2021), Davao del Norte (Galerio and Martinez 2009;Pototan et al 2017;Alimbon and Manseguiao 2021b), and Davao del Sur (Jumawan et al 2015;Cardillo and Novero 2018).…”

“…The natural type has the highest values for tree density, mean diameter, and basal area. Conversely, rehabilitated and degraded forests exhibit a decrease in these three parameters (Fatonah et al 2021). The tree density in Mengkapan Village, Sungai Apit, Siak constitutes the sparse to dense category (Efriyeldi et al 2020), with carbon sequestration measured at 113.18 tons/ha, and the highest contribution coming from Xylocarpus granatum (Hamidy 2020).…”
