Floral presence and flower identity alter cereal aphid endosymbiont communities on adjacent crops

Abstract: 1. Floral plantings adjacent to crops fields can recruit populations of natural enemies by providing flower nectar and non-crop prey to increase natural pest regulation. Observed variation in success rates might be due to changes in the unseen community of protective endosymbionts hosted by many herbivorous insects, which can confer resistance to various specialist natural enemies, e.g. parasitoid wasps. Reduced insect control may occur if highly protective symbiont combinations increase in frequency via selec… Show more

In cereal aphids these endosymbionts can occur individually or co-occur alongside other endosymbionts in a range of multi-infections (Leybourne et al, 2023;Zytynska et al, 2023). Infection frequencies of these nonessential endosymbionts are highly variable and generally range from 0% to 80%, depending on the endosymbiont and aphid species (Guo et al, 2019;Henry et al, 2015;Leybourne et al, 2023;Zytynska et al, 2023).…”

“…Even individual aphids can harbour multiple symbionts. Recent field data from the cereal aphid Sitobion avenae found a very high prevalence of co‐infections and suggests that rather than just individual symbionts certain symbiont combination could provide the best protection against particular parasitoids (Zytynska et al., 2023). In A. fabae , however, multiple infections do not appear to play an important role.…”

“…and Arsenophonus spp. [11,16,19,20]. Facultative endosymbionts occur naturally in cereal aphid populations [11,20], and facultative endosymbionts can exist in individual infections, co-infections or multi-infections [11,2022].…”
