AbstractDifferences in floral morphologies can strongly affect pollination behavior and efficient propagation. In this paper, the population of Epimedium pubescens, a species endemic to China, were observed to reveal its floral morphs effect on reproduction. In E. pubescens, three different floral morphs were known: (i) Styles of 25.33% flowers grew longer than stamens (LS).(ii) Pistil equal to or shorter than stamens was also observed in 7.33% flowers (HS). (iii) Styles of 67.33% flowers grew shorter than stamens, these styles grew abaxially away from stamens or stamens of those flowers would spread out for about half hour to depart from style (CS). The quantitative characters of in leaf number, leaf length, sepal length and width, filament length, style length, pollen number and P/O ratio the length and width of inner sepal and the length of filament and style were significant differences in three floral morphs. This may be due to the differences in environmental factors, especial the relative humidity. The fruit set and seed set were no significantly different in three floral morphs, but the fruit set and seed set of HS are relatively lower than other two morphs. This may be related to pollinator visiting behavior, pollinators of HS were easily to contact with mixed pollen. The results suggested that floral morphs and pollinator behavior could remarkably effect on reproductive biology of E. pubescens.

Resumen En el Perú, Cucurbita moschata Duchesne tiene una variedad local llamada Loche, que se propaga por esquejes y de la que se conoce muy poco sobre su reproducción sexual. Por ello, el objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar la biología floral y reproductiva del Loche de Lambayeque. En esta especie las flores femeninas poseen mayor diámetro y longitud de corola que las masculinas, sin embargo, estas últimas presentan pedicelos y sépalos más largos. La floración masculina inició antes que la femenina con la aparición de los botones florales. En la antesis, las flores femeninas iniciaron este proceso antes que las masculinas. Asimismo, durante la producción de flores en promedio se observó 10 flores masculinas por cada flor femenina. En relación al grano de polen, éste tiene una viabilidad del 98% desde la antesis, la que decae hasta un 20% al día siguiente. El número promedio de granos de polen por flor osciló entre 25 125 y 31 833 y el diámetro presentó de 0.1 a 0.2 mm. El estigma es receptivo durante tres días desde la antesis. La producción de néctar fue mayor en las flores femeninas que en las masculinas. El Loche presenta varios sistemas reproductivos: a nivel sexual, la geitonogamia y alogamia; y a nivel asexual, por medio de esquejes y apomixis facultativa, los cuales fueron determinados a partir de pruebas de polinización. Entre los polinizadores de C. moschata, el orden Hymenoptera tiene el mayor número de familias con afinidad por sus flores. Las familias Vespidae y Apidae son las de mayor regularidad en las visitas, siendo Drosophila sp. la de mayor duración en estancia.

Orchid pollination and evolution are common topics in evolutionary biology. China has approximately 1400 orchid species distributed in diverse habitats and account for approximately 5% of the orchid species in the world. These orchids provide us with materials to explore coevolution and organic evolution. We summarized 53 Chinese orchid pollination studies and synthesized their main findings and common patterns. Bees and flies are the main pollinators of Chinese orchids and drive the diversification of Paphiopedilum and Cypripedium. In addition, the patterns are consistent with phylogenetic evolution studies. Almost half of the Chinese orchids use a common fooddeceptive pollination strategy to transfer their pollens. Other orchids use Batesian mimicry, brood-site imitation, and green-leaf volatile imitation, which is rare. Holcoglossum amesianum (Rchb. f.) Christenson and Paphiopedilum parishii (Rchb. f.) Stein, which live in insect-scarce habitats, use self-pollination strategies to ensure their reproductive success. However, studies on pollination are in the early stages and comprehensive studies are scarce. Therefore, future studies should involve additional disciplines and techniques, such as chemecologic, electrophysiologic, genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic methods, to evaluate the floral features that attract specific pollinators and to elucidate the patterns of Chinese orchid pollination, evolutionary history, diversification, and speciation between orchids and their pollinators.
