Aim:The rapid spread of cyanobacteria in water sources and reservoirs has caused serious environmental damage and public health problems, and consists in a problem that challenges the institutions responsible for providing water to the population. In this study, the quantification of microcystin, saxitoxins and cyanobacteria levels was performed over 3 years in the semi-arid reservoirs of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). In addition, we analyzed the seasonal distribution of cyanotoxins and the percentage of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins which were above the limit established by Brazilian law.MethodsThe study was conducted between 2009 and 2011 in four dams with six sites: Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves (ARG) in Itajá, San Rafael (SR) and Jucurutu; Passagem das Traíras (PT); Itans and Gargalheiras (GARG). Cyanobacteria presence were quantified and identified and the presence of microcystins (MCYs) and saxitoxins (STXs) was investigated by ELISA.ResultsThe densities of cyanobacteria were found to be above the permitted in 76% of cases. The ELISA results showed that of the 128 samples analyzed, 27% were above the maximum allowed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health Order 2914/2011. A seasonal pattern for the presence of MCYs was found (0.00227 to 24.1954 µg.L–1), with the highest values in the rainy season. There was no clear seasonal pattern for STXs (0.003 to 0.766 µg.L–1).ConclusionsThis study showed the importance of establishing a water quality monitoring for human consumption and its potability standards since the concentration of MCYs in some samples was above the maximum limit allowed by Brazilian law, thus posing a risk to public health since the conventional water treatment is not able to eliminate these potent hepatotoxins.

Todos os corpos d'água continentais, naturais ou antrópicos, emitem gases do efeito estufa. Em reservatórios construídos para geração de energia elétrica, a intensidade de emissão está diretamente relacionada à idade a ao tipo de vegetação inundada. Este trabalho teve como objetivo obter uma caracterização da matéria orgânica (MO) em sedimentos do Reservatório do Funil (RJ), construído há cinco décadas no leito do Rio Paraíba do Sul para geração de energia elétrica. As análises das composições elementares (C/N), isotópicas (δ 13 C e δ 15 N) e moleculares (esteróis e n-alcanos) demonstraram o predomínio da entrada de fonte alóctone pelo escoamento superficial de solos ricos em restos de plantas terrestres. Somados a essa entrada foram detectados em toda a extensão do Reservatório n-alcanos característicos de floresta inundada devido à predominância dos compostos C 29 , C 31 e C 33 , com a presença de mistura complexa não resolvida (MCNR). No entanto, por meio do esterol fecal coprostanol foi observado que o Reservatório do Funil recebe influência de efluentes domésticos, tornando-se altamente contaminado no ponto central. A diminuição da razão C:N e da proporção dos lipídios terrígenos sobre os aquáticos na porção central e a jusante sugere intensificação de atividades fitoplanctônicas e bacterianas. Apesar da condição eutrófica do reservatório, nota-se que a sedimentação e os processos autóctones atuam depurando compostos orgânicos e exportando material refratário para o Rio Paraíba do Sul.

Web tools for statistical investigation with an interactive and friendly interface enable users without programming knowledge to conduct their analyses. We develop an Interactive Correlation Environment (ICE) in an open access platform to perform spectral collinearity analysis for biogeochemical activity retrieval. We evaluate its performance on different browsers and applied it to retrieve chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration in a tropical reservoir. The use of ICE to retrieve water chl-a concentration got a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) lower than 7% for seasonal datasets, enhancing ICE's ability to adapt it within season. An RMSE of 17% was found for the mixed dataset with a large range of chl-a concentrations. We conclude that the use of ICE is recommended, due to its quick response, easily manipulation, high accuracy, and empirical adaptation to seasonal variability. Its use is enhanced by the development of hyperspectral sensors, which allow the identification of several biogeochemical components, such as chl-a, phycocyanin (PC), soil salinity, soil types, leaf nitrogen, and leaf chl-a concentration.
