Flood Risk Mapping Using GIS and Multi-Criteria Analysis at Nanga Pinoh West Kalimantan Area

Abstract: Flood is one of the disasters that often hit various regions in Indonesia, specifically in West Kalimantan. The floods in Nanga Pinoh District, Melawi Regency, submerged 18 villages and thousands of houses. Therefore, this study aimed to map flood risk areas in Nanga Pinoh and their environmental impact. Secondary data on the slope, total rainfall, flow density, soil type, and land cover analyzed with the multi-criteria GIS analysis were used. The results showed that the location had low, medium, and high risk… Show more

“…Conversely, suppose the form and land use method are incorrect, meaning land use does not align with the land's capabilities. In that case, the natural balance becomes disrupted, referred to as hazardous land conditions [29]. Land with abundant vegetation will facilitate rainwater infiltration, and it takes more time for runoff to reach rivers, reducing the likelihood of flooding compared to areas without vegetation [26].…”

“…marked increase in the level of watershed management through the characteristics of a watershed (Hasan et al, 2017;Purwanto et al, 2022). Many studies related to spatial-based morphometric analysis, namely Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems.…”

“…One of the affected community activities is the agricultural sector. High rainfall makes slopes steeper, and higher water runoff makes groundwater reserves smaller, impacting agricultural land degradation [1] [2] [3] [4]. Data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) shows that extreme weather conditions have an impact on increasing flood hazard zones in several areas, one of which is around the Tuntang watershed.…”

“…Therefore, Tuntang watershed and its surroundings need a good disaster management system to minimize material losses and casualties. Educating the general public and students in schools about the importance of evacuation routes and appropriate and efficient evacuation sites will have a significant impact [4] [5] [6].…”
