Flood risk awareness and preparedness: The role of trust in information sources

Abstract: A realistic and scientific risks communication system is inevitable for better risk awareness and improved disaster preparedness. Conventional disaster management studies paid much attention on the contents of the information, and ignored the importance of information source. Since natural disasters are uncertain and complex, individuals decisions on disaster issues depend much on their trust in risk information source. This study systematically examines the role of trust in risk awareness and preparedness. Th… Show more

“…This will provide the theoretical basis for modelling how the artificial population in Vigiflood reacts to the player's decisions in terms of communicating vigilance. (Samaddar et al 2012) show the importance of integrated flood risk management, including both structural physical measures, and appropriate communication. Indeed, individual protective actions by the population could drastically reduce costs induced by flash floods (up to 80% according to (Grothmann and Reusswig 2006)).…”

“…Various cognitive and affective factors are also identified such as mental noise, stress, a focus on negative content, and lack of trust in the authorities (Covello and Sandman 2001;Covello 2003). For instance (Samaddar et al 2012) study in Mumbai, India shows the importance of the population's trust in the information source on the resulting risk awareness and preparedness.…”

“…An equally important element of this communication is the credibility of resources (specifically media, web-portals, etc. ), which can fundamentally influence the public's view of the issue [53]. However, this requires more in-depth research.…”
