Floating Spatial Domain Averaging in Surface Soil Remediation

Abstract: Cleanup plans for contaminated surface soil are frequently developed with the goal of ensuring that regulatory criteria for risk exposure are met after remediation. Currently, some of the plans for Superfund sites are based on the premise that a concentration equal to the average goal or based on a confidence level expression of the concentration measurements is not to be exceeded (NTE). However, in cases of widespread low-level contamination, the NTE constraint may result in lowering risk well below the regul… Show more

“…Both alternatives and criteria can be classified into: spatially explicit and spatially implicitly categories . Examples of the raster-based spatially implicit criteria are given in Brakewood and Grasso (2000), Fuller et al (2003), Store and Jokimäki (2003), , and Ligmann-Zielinska and . According to survey, a majority of the GIS-MCDA studies (almost 70 %) involved a combination of spatially implicit and explicit criteria (e.g., Lin et al 1997;Seppelt and Voinov 2002;Wu et al 2004).…”

“…The ability to import and export GIS shape files for mapping sample locations and concentrations in RS-VSP was a significant innovation over older versions of VSP. This function gives RS-VSP portability to GIS-based programs for geospatial/geostatistical interpolation techniques such as spatial domain averaging (Brakewood and Grasso, 2000), and updating the ORSM.…”

“…Selective remediation has been introduced as an alternative to cleaning the entire unit (3,(6)(7)(8). The basic idea is to treat only the hot spots within the unit so that the pollutant level of the entire EU becomes lower than the target concentration.…”
