“…We chose the Pearl River Delta, China (which includes Hong Kong and Macao) for our first case study. This region was selected due to the presence of existing, degraded oyster reefs (Beck et al, 2011;Lau et al, 2020) and the world's longest recorded history of oyster cultivation dating back 1000 years (Cheung, 2019). Oyster reef restoration projects in this region are also underway, however monitoring and results have not yet been reported on.…”

“…Introduction: the more-than-commodity commons Sociological and anthropological studies have shown that the commodification of marine creatures and the industrialization of production can cause serious problems for marine life and coastal communities (McGoodwin, 1990;Longo et al, 2015). Nevertheless, anthropological studies suggest that many resource-dependent communities pay significant attention to issues of economic and ecological sustainability and may adjust their use of natural resources in response to either or both of these considerations (Acheson and Gardner, 2004;Cheung, 2019;Snyder and Martin, 2015;Tang and Tang, 2010). Anthropologists studying marine communities around the world have argued that community-based fishery management is a better alternative for managing marine resources than government control or privatization (Berkes et al, 2016;Feeny et al, 1990;Jentoft et al, 1998).…”
