Floatation, a Bulk-Selection Method for Breeders which Permits the Selection of Faster Modifying Barley Grains

Abstract: We have confirmed that floatation in salt solutions can be used to separate less-dense, more mealy, lower nitrogen-containing barley from more dense barley with less good malting quality having more steely grains and higher nitrogen contents. This gives breeders a useful tool for massselecting barley with potentially favourable characteristics for malting. We have now shoion that green malt can be fractionated by floatation on sucrose solutions into fractions the least dense ofiuhich contains grains which are t… Show more

“…With many breeding systems this means that much grain is discarded in each generation after a cross has been made although, statistically, good malting quality strains are likely to be present in the discarded material. We (Dennis Briggs, Stan Sole of the Crisp Malting Group and Paul Bury of New Farm Crops) have some evidence that it is possible 116 . H.T.…”

“…Grain density is a measure of the compactness of a seed. Grain with a lower density has a mealy endosperm that contains loosely packed starch granules in a discontinuous protein matrix interspersed with vacuous spaces (Nair et al 2010;Psota et al 2007;Nair et al 2011;Briggs et al 2001;Chang 1988;Fang and Campbell 2000). Physical traits, such as grain weight and size, are used routinely to classify the harvest quality of barley.…”
