Flight Research of an Aerospike Nozzle Using High Power Solid Rockets

Abstract: Flight research has been conducted on an aerospike rocket nozzle using high power solid rockets. Two aerospike rockets and one conventional rocket were flown successfully to supersonic speeds, providing the first known set of transonic flight performance data for aerospike rockets. This paper describes the rockets, solid rocket motors, nozzles, and rocket instrumentation system. Flight test results are also discussed and compared with ground test results. Flight data show that all of the rockets successfully r… Show more

“…The increased specic impulse (I sp ) due to a higher possible expansion ratio using an aerospike nozzle translates to a 8-9% decrease in the propellant mass and total system weight for space and near-space applications. 14 Additionally, one of the often-overlooked properties of the aerospike nozzle is the ability to achieve thrust vectoring aerodynamically without active mechanical nozzle gimbals. This oers a signicant potential for reduced system complexity and weight.…”

“…Given a fixed vehicle base area, an aerospike nozzle can present a higher area expansion ratio than a bell nozzle, providing better performance in a space environment or near-vacuum environment like Mars. The increased specific impulse (I sp ) due to a higher possible expansion ratio using an aerospike nozzle translates to a 8-9% decrease in the propellant mass and total system weight for space and near-space applications [2]. Figure 1 compares two aerospike-based nozzle designs with their conventional counterparts with the same effective expansion ratios [3].…”

“…One of the few describes a series of tests on solid rockets, benchmarked against a conventional nozzle [3]. In this test program, two aerospike rockets and one conventional rocket were flown successfully to supersonic speeds, providing the first recorded flights of solid propellant aerospike rockets as well as the first set of transonic flight performance data for these types of rocket motors.…”
