Flight demonstration of 3D perspective synthetic vision and ADS-B for closely spaced parallel approaches

Abstract: Airports lose significant capacity during instnunent conditions. Several plans are afoot to expand the nations' airports to achieve sufficient runway spacing for independent IFR approaches. The projected cost of the ten largest projects in the United States is $8 -16 Billion. The ability to conduct Closely Spaced Parallel Approaches (CSPA) in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) could reduce the requisite runway separation and significantly lower that national expense. In addition the environmental impac… Show more

“…In SVS, data link technology is adopted for the signal transmission from the control tower to the approaching aircraft. However, because of the high speed and low elevation of the approaching aircraft, the performance of point-to-point data link suffers from serious multipath fading in the flight test [3,4].…”

“…

The ground-to-air communications in the aircraft approach stage suffer from multipath fading. However, because of the high speed and low elevation of the approaching aircraft, the performance of point-to-point data link suffers from serious multipath fading in the flight test [3,4].In the last decade, cooperative communication technique has received much attention in the communication society [5][6][7], which is proved to be effective in combating multipath fading by exploiting the spatial diversity of the relay nodes. The relay selection problem is formulated to minimize the spectrum cost while preserving the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) outage requirement of the approaching aircraft.
