Flight Delay Propagation Impact on Strategic Air Traffic Flow Management

Abstract: Another dimension of delay propagation is the temporal transmission of delays over the course of a day at a single airport or at connected airports. When large delays are incurred in the morning, it becomes more likely that delays will take place later in the day. This phenomenon may be observed at both an airport level and a national level, with the severity of the propagation potentially related to the imbalance between demand and capacity. This is an illustration of a more general phenomenon in the study of… Show more

“…Reference [24] developed a delay tree to quantify the propagation of delays; this is based on the concept of delay multiplier, i.e., the ratio between the initial delay over the sum of all potential downstream delays. Reference [25] developed two models that measure the level of flight delays [18] to examine the delay propagation in different spatial and temporal terms. Reference [26] analyzed the data of departure and arrival for ten major airports in order to improve the accuracy of delay prediction.…”

“…The delay distribution is estimated, with Denver International Airport chosen as a case study airport. Attempts have also been made to categorize flight delays into original delay, also known as new formed delay, and propagated delay [9,16,17]. The first flight flown by an aircraft in a day is considered to be merely impacted by the original delay, while other flights can both engender original delay and receive delay propagated from upstream flights.…”

“…The sensitivity of an airport network is remarkable as all the airport resources are highly linked (Beatty et al, 1999). The delay of a flight leads to delay propagation of various airport activities and scheduling (Campanelli et al, 2016;Churchill et al, 2010;Kafle and Zou, 2016;Pyrgiotis et al, 2013). It is known that aircraft approaching and take-off times are not precisely determined in advance due to the dynamic changes of the environment.…”
