Flexural strength of heat-polymerized polymethyl methacrylate denture resin reinforced with glass, aramid, or nylon fibers

Abstract: Within the limitations of this study, the flexural strength of heat-polymerized PMMA denture resin was improved after reinforcement with glass or aramid fibers. It may be possible to apply these results to distal extension partial denture bases and provisional fixed partial dentures.

“…In the present study, glass fibers have been chosen for the reinforcement of conventional and high impact strength denture base resins. Glass fiber reinforced dentures are much stronger and more resilient under flexural fatigue or impact stress conditions and also absorbs less water content than conventional and high impact strength resin dentures and hence the chances of fracture of the denture can be substantially eliminated 1 .…”

“…Therefore, the choice of appropriate methods for denture cleaning is clinically important, when the objective of the procedures is not to cause surface damage of the denture base, and for daily use to prevent microbial adhesion. Moreover, fracture of an acrylic denture base is a common problem and occurs during masticatory function because of base deformation and consequent resin fatigue 19 . Immersion in denture cleansers and disinfecting solutions may decrease the flexural strength of acrylic resins 20,21 .…”

“…These often lead to denture failure during chewing or when fall out of the patient's hand. In order to enhance some properties of PMMA, various efforts have been taken including addition of metal wires or plates, fibers, [3][4][5][6] metal dification of chemical structure. In recent ted attention as a denture base materials.…”
