Flexural Strength of a Plain-Woven Tyranno-SA Fiber-Reinforced SiC Matrix Composite

Abstract: A SiC/SiC composite in a disc preform of 120 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm in thickness was fabricated by the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process. The composite was reinforced with plain-woven high-crystalline Tyarnno-SA fiber. Microstructure examinations and density measurements indicated a quite dense and very good space homogeneous matrix deposition in the composite. The fracture behavior and statistic reliability of the flexural strength upon three-point bending loading were investigated. The composite h… Show more

“…Araki et al [13] examined the flexural properties of several high-density SiC f /SiC composites using Weibull distribution analysis. There have been a number of recent studies report continued developing of SiC f /SiC composites with 2D and 3D preforms [14][15][16]. We investigated 2D-woven and 3D-braided composites using CVI had improved properties for use in molten salt reactors.…”

“…Methods for preparation of these oxide fibers include spinning of a sol, a solution, or slurry, usually containing fugitive organics as part of a precursor. 6 The tensile strength of various single crystalline oxide fibers at room temperature and elevated temperatures Among the oxide fibers, alumina-based and aluminosilicate fibers with near mullite compositions are those most widely used. In particular, the 3 M Company has developed a series of oxide fibers.…”

“…On the other hand, silicon carbide fibers have achieved great progress in specific characteristics [2][3][4][5] over the last six years. As a result, lots of advanced research on ceramic composite materials to make the best use of their excellent heat-resistance and oxidation-resistance have been carried out [6]. Furthermore, an excellent functional ceramic fiber with a gradient surface layer was recently synthesized from an organosilicon polymer making full use of the technology of the aforementioned fiber production.…”
