FlexIR: a Domain-Specific Information Retrieval System

Abstract: Abstract-We present a precise search engine adapted to professional environments which are characterized by a domain (e.g. medicine, law, sport, and so on). In our approach, each domain has its own terminology (i.e. a set of terms that denote its concepts: team, player, etc.) and it is organized along dimensions, such as person, location, etc. The dimensions, as described below, are made of concepts and semantic relationships that represent a particular perspective or point of view on the domain. “…Example of faceted systems are DERA [10] and the Flamenco Search Interface Project 1 , which uses hierarchical faceted metadata in a manner that allows users to both refine and expand the current query while maintaining a consistent representation of the knowledge [3]. To a certain degree facet based search engines include Facetedpedia [17], query-dependent faceted interfaces for Wikipedia, FlexIR [25], a domain-specific information retrieval system that uses the notion of domain dimensions, HAYSTACK 2 and CiteSeer 3 . This paper brings the faceted system approach into the realm of computer vision.…”
