Flexible vs. rigid dieting in resistance-trained individuals seeking to optimize their physiques: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Background The purpose of this study was to compare a flexible vs. rigid diet on weight loss and subsequent weight regain in resistance-trained (RT) participants in a randomized, parallel group design. Methods Twenty-three males and females (25.6 ± 6.1 yrs; 170 ± 8.1 cm; 75.4 ± 10.3 kg) completed the 20-week intervention (consisting of a 10-week diet phase and a 10-week post-diet phase). Participants were randomized to a flexible diet (FLEX) compri… Show more

“…articles do not report any significant changes in FFM at the end of the WG period, 50,53,56,85,87,88 and Kondo and collaborators 41 noted a significant increase of 1.2 kg (p < 0.05). Of the 9 articles that followed strength and conditioning athletes whose actual WL duration was known, 16,39,54,55,[80][81][82]96,97 4 were case studies. 16,[80][81][82] The subject-adjusted mean indicates a loss of 5.5 ± 4.1% of BW pre-WL in 1 82 to 7 months 80 of diet.…”

“…However, each person’s meal menu was diverse; therefore, it was difficult to match the exact calories in the food preparation process. Nevertheless, these unintentionally reduced calorie intakes could be considered to be within acceptable variability for a typical diet because even in previous studies with calorie restriction, the variation in calorie intake was approximately 6% to 10% [ 27 , 28 ]. Most weight loss programs reduce energy intake by 25–60% below the expected energy requirements, with the goal of losing an average of 5–8% of weight [ 29 , 30 , 31 ].…”

“…In addition, they provide micronutrients and antioxidants [47][48][49][50][51]. That said, incorporating small amounts of "unhealthy" foods can be accepted to maintain some of the patient's habits, but in moderation, as flexible dieting strategies have been deemed an important weight loss approach as a means of avoiding weight regain [52].…”
