Abstract:The recent growing diffusion of dispersed generation in low voltage (LV) distribution networks is entailing new rules to make local generators participate in network stability. Consequently, national and international grid codes, which define the connection rules for stability and safety of electrical power systems, have been updated requiring distributed generators and electrical storage systems to supply stabilizing contributions. In this scenario, specific attention to the uncontrolled islanding issue has to be addressed since currently required anti-islanding protection systems, based on relays locally measuring voltage and frequency, could no longer be suitable. In this paper, the effects on the interface protection performance of different LV generators' stabilizing functions are analysed. The study takes into account existing requirements, such as the generators' active power regulation (according to the measured frequency) and reactive power regulation (depending on the local measured voltage). In addition, the paper focuses on other stabilizing features under discussion, derived from the medium voltage (MV) distribution network grid codes or proposed in the literature, such as fast voltage support (FVS) and inertia emulation. Stabilizing functions have been reproduced in the DIgSILENT PowerFactory 2016 software environment, making use of its native programming language. Later, they are tested both alone and together, aiming to obtain a comprehensive analysis on their impact on the anti-islanding protection effectiveness. Through dynamic simulations in several network scenarios the paper demonstrates the detrimental impact that such stabilizing regulations may have on loss-of-main protection effectiveness, leading to an increased risk of unintentional islanding.

Recent developments in power electronics technology have spurred interest in the use of renewable energy sources as distributed generation (DG) generators. The key component in DG generators is a grid-connected inverter that serves as an effective interface between the renewable energy source and the utility grid. The multifunctional inverter (MFI) is special type of grid-connected inverter that has elicited much attention in recent years. MFIs not only generate power for DGs but also provide increased functionality through improved power quality and voltage and reactive power support; thus, the capability of the auxiliary service for the utility grid is improved. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the various MFI system configurations for single-phase (two-wire) and three-phase (three-or four-wire) systems and control strategies for the compensation of different power quality problems. The advances in practical applications and recent research on MFIs are presented through a review of nearly 200 papers.

Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is gridfriendly for integrating distributed generations (DGs) since it can emulate the operation mechanism of traditional synchronous generator (SG). However, the traditional VSG control strategy, which is mainly suitable for balanced voltage conditions, may lead to power oscillations, current unbalance and even overcurrent under unbalanced voltage sags. To overcome this difficulty, a flexible unbalanced control with peak current limitation for VSG under unbalanced operating conditions is proposed. Based on the basic VSG control algorithm, the control strategy integrates two novel control modules, which are current reference generator (CRG) and power reference generator (PRG). The proposed control strategy can flexibly meet different operation demands, which includes current balancing, constant active or reactive power. And the injected currents are kept within safety values for a better utilization of the VSG power capacity. Furthermore, the experimental platform is built. Experimental results demonstrate the validness and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
