Flexible Turtle Excluder Device (TED): an effective tool for Mediterranean coastal multispecies bottom trawl fisheries

Abstract: -The effect of a flexible Turtle Excluder Device (TED) on the catching efficiency and performance of a commercial bottom trawl was tested in a gear comparison study for a Mediterranean coastal multispecies bottom trawl fishery. The device affected neither bottom trawl technical performances (horizontal and vertical net opening and door spread) nor did it increase the required towing force, hence fuel consumption remained constant. Comparison of commercial catches for the major species demonstrated that using t… Show more

“…On the other hand, the marine debris and litter were significantly reduced in the TED net, with the consequence of improving the quality of the catch by removal of large objects potentially damaging the catch itself. These results are in accordance with those obtained by [36]. Recently, [37] showed the persistence of several litter categories in the northern Adriatic.…”

“…In fact, the litter can crush the fragile crustaceans in the traditional nets losing animals potentially marketable. From these results, TED appeared as a promising device to be implemented in the traditional gears without compromising the commercial catches as already stated by [36].…”

“…The area is characterized by shallow waters (<100 m) and rich benthic communities, and is considered as a key-feeding habitat in the whole Mediterranean, where turtles in the demersal stage spend the winter (Lazar & Tvrtkovic, 1995; Casale, Laurent & De Metrio, 2004; Lazar, Ziza & Tvrtkovic, 2006; Lucchetti & Sala, 2010). However, the Northern and Central Adriatic are also characterized by a wide continental shelf, low depth, and a flat seabed, which is ideal for trawling (Lucchetti, Punzo & Virgili, 2016). The high density of turtles and trawlers in autumn and winter in this area give rise to a bycatch hotspot, also supported by the ZINB analysis that highlighted how trawl net was perhaps the most dangerous gear in terms of predicted catches per boat.…”

“…Considering the high diversification of the Mediterranean fishing fleet, all three life‐cycle phases can be affected, by different types of fishing gear (Camiñas, ; Casale, ; Lucchetti & Sala, ). Vessels from large‐scale and small‐scale fisheries (SSFs) using trawls (Casale, Laurent, & De Metrio, ; Jribi, Bradai, & Bouain, ; Lucchetti, Punzo, & Virgili, ; Lucchetti & Sala, ), longlines (Deflorio, Aprea, Corriero, Santamaria, & De Metrio, ; Piovano, Celona, Basciano, Di Marco, & Giacoma, ; Piovano, Swimmer, & Giacoma, ; Piovano et al, , ), gillnets (Casale, Freggi, Basso, & Argano, ; Echwikhi, Jribi, Bradai, & Bouain, , ), encircling nets (Casale, ), and other gears all result in sea turtle bycatch. According to recent estimates (Casale, ), fishing activities in the Mediterranean are responsible each year for the incidental catch of some 130 000 marine turtles, caught by longlines (70 000 individuals), bottom trawls (40 000), and fixed nets (23 000), leading to more than 40 000 deaths.…”
