Flexible polyvinyl alcohol/2-hydroxypropanoic acid films: effect of residual acetyl moieties on mechanical, thermal and antibacterial properties

Abstract: This work ascertains the effect of the degree of hydrolysis of polyvinyl alcohol under extended interaction with 2-hydroxypropanoic acid (lactic acid). Systems based on three different types of polyvinyl alcohol matrices (of hydrolysis degree 80, 88 and 98 mol%) and lactic acid were characterized according to their physicochemical, mechanical and thermal properties. An agar diffusion test and the dilution and spread plate technique were conducted to facilitate antibacterial activity to counteract Staphylococcu… Show more

“…The polymeric drug delivery systems with controlled release and increased solubility of the drug are investigated. Drugs or antimicrobial agents can be incorporated directly into polymers or they are attached via the side chains often with peptides [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ].…”

“…The FTIR spectrum for glycerol shows the stretching from O-H at about 3297 cm -1 , the stretching from C-H groups at 2810-2950 cm -1 and the absorption corresponding to the C-O-H groups in the region of 1400 to 1420 cm -1 [13]. For PHB and PVA [14][15][16] absorptions from O-H were observed at 1021 cm -1 , -CH2 in the interval from 1417 to 1461 cm -1 and C-H vibrations at 830 cm -1 . In addition, both PVA and PHB showed typical carbonyl bands around 1730 cm -1 .…”

“…A Figura 29 (a e b) representa os espectros de FTIR dos polímeros puros de PVA e de PLA, respectivamente. Os espectros para os polímeros puros apresentaram bandas características descritas para o PVA [114,115], conforme a Tabela 6, e para o PLA [116,117], conforme a Tabela Fonte: Adaptado de FINOTTI, P.F.M., (2014, p. 70) [117].…”
