Flexible Pipe Sensitivity to Birdcaging and Armor Wire Lateral Buckling

Abstract: Petrobras has been successfully dealing with deep water floating production systems using flexible pipes since 1977. During the completion of Marlim South 3 well in 1977, Petrobras was surprised by the occurrence of two birdcage type failures. At that time, Marlim South 3, in a water depth of 1709 m was the deepest offshore production well in operation. Since then, Petrobras has been testing flexible pipes using a field test known as DIP test. In a DIP test, an empty end capped sample of a flexible pipe, about… Show more

“…The failure modes of the tensile armor layer under axial compression are complicated since the special structural form of the unbonded flexible riser leads to its axial compressive stiffness being much smaller than the axial tensile stiffness, so it might fail when subjected to compression during the installation or life cycle. There are two failure modes under axial compression: radial failure and lateral failure, as shown in Figure 8 [ 24 , 137 ]. The cause of both failure modes starts from damage to the outer sheath layer.…”

“…In order to study the mechanisms of lateral buckling of tensile armor and the effect of anti-buckling tape, experiments were carried out for three risers with different size and material under same load conditions in 2012 [1]. Lateral buckling was first introduced and described by Braga and Kaleff [2] based on experimental results. Further experiments to study the lateral buckling behavior were carried out by Secher, Bectare and Felix-Henry, studying flexible pipe behavior at 3000m water depth [3], however, details were not available in literature.…”
